Dispute over portrait highlights important estate planning issues

Unlike criminal trials, personal injury lawsuits or even divorces, inheritance disputes seldom make national headlines. However, every so often a very interesting inheritance dispute -- typically involving the rich and famous -- surfaces that has news outlets here in the U.S. and around the world paying very close attention.

Can estate planning include your pets?

When most people sit down to think about crafting an estate plan, they more than likely think about important issues such as how they would like to divide their assets among family and friends, how they would like to be cared for in the event of a medical emergency, and how they would like their financial affairs handled in the event of their incapacity. As it turns out, statistics show that more people are now making another more unorthodox consideration when thinking about crafting their estate plan: how they want their pets to be provided for upon their demise.According to the American Pet Products Association, the number of dog owners including provisions in their will for the care of their pets rose from 5 percent in 2010 to 9 percent in 2012, while the number of cat owners including provisions in their will for the care of their pets rose from 6 percent in 2010 to 9 percent in 2012.

Be careful not to overlook beneficiary designations

While it may seem like a bit of a cliché, many people continue to make -- and stick to -- resolutions for the new year. For some these resolutions are directly related to their physical health and may include losing weight, quitting smoking or exercising more. For others, however, these resolutions may relate directly to their financial health, meaning they have vowed to get their monetary and legal issues in order over the next 12 months.
